The supplement aroused outcry on social media in short order, with many users criticizing the paper. Responding to one of them, Ravit Dahan, Shocken tweeted, "You're insolent. My family was part of Zionism's leadership while you were still climbing trees.
"Haaretz has been in the Shocken family for the past 83 years, and we have gotten on fine without your ideology, and will continue to do so."
A short time later the Haaretz publisher deleted the tweet, possibly realizing his mistake, but many of his followers were appalled by the utterance nonetheless.
Israel Radio presenter Keren Neubach, for instance, wrote, "Blatant and shameful racism. The tweet exposes what Shocken really thinks about parts of the Israeli public."
Avi Dabush, who ran for the Meretz party's leadership in a race eventually won by Tamar Zandberg, tweeted, "We may have 'climbed down' from trees 70 years ago and came to Israel, but it appears it will still be some time before we pass the absurd admission committee headed by Amos Shocken."
Later comment from Shocken himself sought to clarify he deleted the tweet once he realized it was ascribed meaning he did not intend, stating he merely wished to point out the commenter's "ignorance."

My comment: The incident points to a fault line between the borderline anti-Zionism of some of Israel's leftist Ashkenazi elite and the old-fashioned patriotism of many Mizrahim. The elite like to 'virtue signal' by supporting the Palestinians and African refugees, for instance, while leapfrogging over the concerns of Mizrahim.

As one living in Israel for some years I can say that Haaretz is little more than a rag~not even good to use in an outhouse. One wonders how they keep afloat...lefty funds from abroad maybe? Who knows, but I would never have it in my house nor would most Israelis. Would cheer the day they finally get shut down!

The Shocken family is notorious for its haughty attitude towards Mizrachim. Apart from a token one or two in recent years, Mizrachi journalists are not employed by the paper. It has however provided a platform for a half dozen Arab journalists, most of whom justify the irredentist positions of the Palestinian national movement by presenting a distorted account of history, and omitting mention of the aggression and rejectionism of the Arab states in the Arab-Israeli wars starting with the 1948 war.
ReplyDeleteTo Anon, they had Daniel Ben Simon on the haaretz staff. But he is a "leftist" nut like most others at haaretz. Nir Hasson, that name sounds like it is likely Mizrahi, is a well-indoctrinated "leftist" like most others at haaretz.

Schocken's father came to Israel back in the 1920s, I believe, as part of a group of others from Germany who considered themselves culturally superior to all other Jews, including those from Eastern Europe, thereby sharing the traditional German attitude of superiority towards most peoples of Eastern Europe, the Slavic peoples whom Frederick Engels wanted to wipe out for the sake of "progress." The German Jews were instructed by German philosophers, Kant, Hegel and others, that they were inferior to Germans culturally and that Jewish culture was inferior to German culture. They couldn't or didn't dare to tell the Germans that their philosophers were wrong. But they could transpose traditional German contempt for Orientals [including German Jews, according to Kant & Hegel] to the Oriental Jews in Israel. That way they could feel superior to somebody at least.
My wife and I read HaYom in preference to HaAretz, out of respect for our mental health and our blood pressure.
To Orfan, a large share of haaretz stock, maybe a controlling share, is owned by a German company. You can understand how that would impact on haaretz editorial policy.

The "competitive" tantrum trend among hard Israeli left to utter the "racism" terminology has been for some time.
They are ever so loud on isolated cases of violent attacks against Arabs which we all condemn, of course.
Yet, they are silent on every weekly attacks by racist Arabs targeting Jewish civilians (at times travelling for miles far away from own Arab town...). Of course, it's Arab Muslim terrorism but it's also anti-Jewish ethnic racism and religious bigotry.
Yet, will term any Israeli security measure as "racist." As if it's "not" saving lives, what it is really about.
Will minimize Arab Islamic Palestinian use of its own population as human shields (at least since 1980 by Arafat), and Israeli attempts to evacuate before an anti terror operation.
Will maximize, exaggerate any claim of abuse.
Incidentally, with all the heavily funded anti-Israel groups inside Israel. Why isn't there any even as much as a 'peace' movement on the Arab Palestinian side, Hamas' Gaza or Fatah's Ramallah?
If one specific community wants to keep its unique education, they immediately cry "racism".
They are silent on every Israeli court case that favors Arab vs Jew. But ever so loud on any partial-discriminatory incident. Despite the fact, it is rather ultra-orthodox who feel most all out discriminated against, mainly prompted by anti-Religious hatred campaign by hard left like Haaretz - actually.
These supposed "peacenicks", these same hypocrites, incite against, demonize Haredi ultra Orthodox conscientious objectors who refuse to serve in IDF draft in Israeli army.
It might very well be that at the beginning of "it's racism" rant, years ago, it was less meaning it, and more intented to shock, especially Jews, more sensitive, being victims, past and present of bigotry. But it has since become a "normal" language to utter it wherever, if for only that they 'can' float it. There is zero check on it.
The decades routinely vilification of Jews isn't just mere irresponsible. It surpassed that level long ago.
Haaretz and the like, are not just biased. But hate mongers.
