Israel on Monday issued a "severe" warning to its citizens to avoid visiting Tunisia where hundreds of Jewish pilgrims will be celebrating the religious Lag BaOmer festival later this month.
"There is a severe travel warning for Tunisia (high concrete threat)," the Counter-Terrorism Bureau said in a statement released by the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"Terrorist elements, especially those affiliated with Global Jihad, continue to operate in Tunisia and commit attacks; therefore, there is a high threat level against Jewish targets," said the statement.
"It is recommended that visits to Tunisia be avoided," it added. Last year, Tunisia was hit by a string of attacks claimed by the Islamic State group that killed dozens of holidaymakers in the North African country.

on the other hand, Algeria has banned from coming on pilgrimage to a rabbi's tomb there.

The pilgrimage ban from the Algerian authorities is no surprise. What do you expect from a military junta afraid of being seen as friendly with Israel or manipulated by the Jews. This whole pilgrimage saga started with the Oslo peace accords. Before that,no official Jewish person was allowed to visit Rabbi Ankaoua's tomb. After the peace accords, few tours were organized from France and Morocco to create a pilgrimage, it was successful as least in making it believe that a rapprochement was in the work. But all these efforts were dashed with recent violence and war with Gaza's Hamas group. What do you expect?
ReplyDeleteNow the controversy of the Jewish cemetery of Oran is in the news. There was a article from one of the Algerian press that Israel is spreading lies and misinformation that the cemetery is going to be demolished to make way for a highway. The article suggested that resting place will not destroyed. As if everything is fine and dandy. The Oran cemetery has already been demolished by half since the 1980's. The other half was due to be done with just recently for an expansion of a highway. I believe that it will be a matter of time, when there will be no trace of Jewish presence in Oran. The Algerian authorities will always play the double speak language, and with it the notion of bargaining threat. All it takes is another Gaza war, and that will be the end of it. And yet, they will find it nice to come forwards and tell the world that they will not eliminate the cemetery. The notion of Takiya (lying to the teeth to your proclaimed enemies is religious duty) in full swing.
