After decades of discussing
Arab claims for refugees from territories that are today Israel, the
U.N. on Thursday held discussions on the plight of Jewish refugees from
Arab countries following the inception of the State of Israel.
The Justice for Jewish Refugees from Arab
Countries Conference was held at the U.N. headquarters in New York. It
was attended by several regional community heads, with Israel
represented by Regional Development and Energy and Water Minister Silvan
Shalom.
"We hear a lot about the plight of Arab
refugees, but we do not hear a word about 900,000 Jewish refugees from
Arab countries," Shalom said.
The government had raised the issue of recognizing Jewish refugees from Arab countries last year. This marked the second such conference held by the U.N. on the subject.
During his speech, Shalom said that Israel,
together with the World Jewish Congress, was busy compiling a list of
assets left behind by Jewish refugees who had fled Arab countries.
"I was born in Tunis, and my maternal
grandfather, a leader of the Jewish community of Gabes, left behind a
lot of property -- business, real estate holdings and schools," Shalom
said.
This is great news as our Shabbat is to start here

In Friday's Meqor Rishon, and maybe in Ma`ariv as well, Ben Dror Yemini wrote a short item in his weekly column about the meeting at the Knesset earlier in the week about this same issue. Yemini noted that almost nobody from "leftist" parties and movements was there.

ReplyDeleteBen Dror Yemini expected the PEST (Progressive except for Sephardim and Temanim) to be there?
Sylvia, I am not a mind-reader, so I don't know what Yemini was thinking. But give him some credit. He probably foresaw what he saw at the meeting, as you did. But writing for an audience of average newspaper readers, he was trying to teach them something or explain to them, which is that the "left" and "progressives" cannot be trusted to follow their own ostensible principles when it comes to Jews from Arab countries. Which is the same thing that you were trying to say with your PEST anagram.
ReplyDeleteI can't find that article.
ReplyDeleteThis is an item by Yemini, not a full article. See Meqor Rishon, 22 November 2013--Yoman section, p 14. This is Ben Dror Yemini's weekly column in which he takes up several topics. The item of interest is headed: "HaSmol Lo Higi`a" [השמאל לא הגיע].
