True there might be discrimination and racism and close-mindedness, which I find revolting. Btw Sephardim are also capable of racism towards Ashkis, and in fact for centuries when Sephardim were the thriving heart of the Jewish world in many communities if anyone married an Ashki they would be considered as marrying beneath them. But of course there never was the kind of racism that Jews from Arab and Muslim countries experienced in Israel.

The point is, we Sephardim/Mizrahim have a share of the blame. How do we expect to be respected when many of us are trying so hard to gain acceptance (read: Adopt their customs and efface our own) from Ashki Haredis? They DON'T want you, its simple. And instead of changing your beautiful names, like Shetrit, Muallem, Sultan, Shaoulian, to fit the cold, bland mold of Ashki Haredis, take pride in your history, culture and traditions, which many of us do. Set up your OWN Yeshivas and restore Sephardi instruction and impose Sephardi pronounciation. Any Ashkis who want to join, ahlan wa sahlan, they're welcome, but make sure that by the time they leave they're blood will be a few degrees warmer, they'll be ululating klililililili and dropping those 'ayins, Hets, Sadis and Qofs like nobody's business. And oh, our venerable father Abraham wouldn't know what to do with gefilte *shudder* Sorry my fellow vusvusim, I still love you though!

Sincerely,
A concerned and hot-blooded Mizrahi

Hazaq oo BarukhAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
