Salman Masalha: humiliation
The blogosphere is in uproar about an article published in the leftist daily Haaretz yesterday. The newspaper has been accused of plumbing new depths of bigotry by publishing an account of how Israeli-Arab Salman Masalha was humiliated as he underwent security questioning at Ben-Gurion airport. One passage in particular stands out for its racism: Masalha's description of being questioned by a swarthy Mizrahi Jew.
Honestreporting comments:
"While Masalha accuses Israel of being a racist state, he may wish to reflect on his own choice of words when describing the senior Israeli security officer whom is the object of his rage:
Ophir was a young, darkish security man, perhaps a descendant of converts from the Arabian Peninsula, perhaps from the Atlas Mountains. But one thing was clear, his black color looked very shabby, tattered and stained with evil.
It is astonishing that a newspaper that promotes its “liberal”
sensitivities could allow a sentence such as this to get past the
editorial process. It does however, reveal that Masalha is driven by the
same racism he claims to be a victim of."Ari Soffer blogging on Arutz Sheva concludes:
"Ironically, the article in question is a rather crude attempt to portray Israeli airport security as "racist", and entitled "Israeli apartheid exposed at the airport". Yet far from revealing "Israeli racism", the author, one Salman Masalha, instead illustrates very well how deep-rooted anti-Semitism and anti-Black racism is within Arab society via a bizarre, racist outburst - which he apparently thinks nothing of even as he rails against "Israeli apartheid"."
Even liberal columnist Jeffrey Goldberg has joined the chorus of disapproval.
He tweeted: "Ok, maybe it's just time to stop reading Haaretz for a little while. An important issue, but a crazed presentation."
For Point of No Return commenter Sylvia, the episode reveals deep anti-dhimmi prejudice:
"There is absolutely nothing in that story that we, Israelis Jews, don't experience at the airport, it's the same questions and the same clarifications. What got to him is that a former dhimmi is asking those questions. And this is unbearable."
I think the naked viciousness of the language employed in this article and the fact that the editor allowed it to go ahead reveals how far Haaretz has gone in its assimilation to the Arab contempt for Israeli Jews. They can no longer distinguish between what might have been a fine piece of writing by an Arab Israeli having to endure extra scrutiny at the airport and a racist screed against the very security people who are charged with making sure noone gets exploded in midflight.
ReplyDeleteIn a way I welcome this self-exposure by Haaretz. It points to a blind spot and the festering dark sympathy some Israelis still harbor for Jew on Jew racism. The best disinfectant is sunlight.
Haarets publisher Schocken says that Mssalha's op ed is not racist

@Ostrov_A You mean you have nothing to say on the issue at hand and prefer general, libelous and baseless accusation.

@AmosSchocken1 As I said, you demeaned an otherwise serious issue to racist bile. It just happens to also be directed at Jews.

@AmosSchocken1 @Ostrov_A We all get strong questioning. I was stripped to my underwear by ElAl in London. I’m a Jew. It happens.

@AmosSchocken1 @Ostrov_A and also, how many airline terror incidents have been initiated by Jews (assuming we rule out 9-11)?

@brianoflondon @Ostrov_A True, but you are not systematically and always questioned and searched. This is different from profiling by race.

@Ostrov_A @haaretzcom Don't guess anything. Read the quotation in its context.
@AmosSchocken1 is this the high standard journalism at @haaretzcom you were talking about? Seems more #racism to me http://bit.ly/1jU7NGd

@Ostrov_A The problem is with ethnic and racist profiling of a 60 something year old author and novelist based solely on his being Arab.

@Ostrov_A Saying it again: the problem is racist profiling based on Masalha's being an Arab, and solely on that.

I'm glad Amos S is being challenged on this. He is in complete denial, having lost touch with reality...
