The death has been announced on 31 December 2013 of Joseph Abdel Wahed, the founder of JIMENA, an advocacy group for Jews fron Arab lands based in California.
Here is JIMENA's announcement :
"JIMENA (Jews Indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of its founder Joe Abdel Wahed."
Born in a suburb of Cairo, Egypt, in 1936, Joe immigrated to the US where he pursued a successful career in banking and economics, eventually becoming Chief Economist at Wells Fargo.
A leader of San Francisco's Karaite and Mizrahi communities, Joe fought for universal justice and recognition of the 850,000 forgotten refugees from Arab countries. (...)
Joe founded JIMENA in 2001 and it has since grown to over 10,000 members...He inspired thousands through his presentations and writings.
